During the 2014 oil crash, we spent the week after Christmas **on-site in North Dakota** (in -40°F wind chills, while our competitors were in the office, or skiing, or on a beach) talking to managers throughout the oil supply chain (oil, frack sand transload facilities, pipeline operators, construction rental equipment companies), to discuss how the economics of shale oil were changing, and how companies in the region were responding.

We used these meetings to:

1) inform our models for tank railcar demand, frack sand demand, and oil rig demand, and

2) developed a profitable pair-trade thesis where we recommended that our hedge fund clients go “long” natural sand producers and “short” artificial sand producers.
